Description:

The following position of a Biotechnologist has become available at our Research Department in Kempton Park. The purpose of this role is to execute laboratory genotype analysis and assist with molecular breeding functions in the Biotechnology Centre in support of seed breeding programme.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the genotype data analysis.
  • Assist in discovery research with breeders
  • Discuss project needs and deadlines with the Lab Manager and other departments as per submitted samples.
  • Execute variety verification based on appropriate, informative systems.
  • Planning and scheduling of experiments to meet set deadlines (including ad hoc projects).
  • Execute purity runs as per project needs to meet set deadlines.
  • Scoring, interpretation, and reporting on projects executed.
  • Keep updated with new molecular protocols/ techniques that could be applicable to the Biotechnology Laboratory.
  • Research into new applications (protocols and methods) of molecular techniques, pertaining to the seed industry.
  • Assist with method development and implementation.
  • Plan, supervise, and assist lab assistant(s) to prepare samples as required.
  • Interacts appropriately and respectfully with others
  • Offers expert service/advice to colleagues.
  • Displays a positive attitude towards the company and its goals.
  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with team members inside and outside the team.

Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BSc Honours Genetics/Molecular Biology/ similar area (essential)
  • MSc Genetics/Molecular Biology/ similar area (advantageous)
  • 3 - 5 years in molecular genetics techniques and data analysis
  • High throughput SNP genotyping and data analysis advantageous
  • DNA extraction
  • SNP genotyping and data analysis
  • Molecular genetics techniques such as MAS, SPGs, MABC
