Description:

Starke Ayres is the foremost African specialist and global supplier of premium vegetable, flower and lawn seed varieties – both for commercial and home garden planting. The following position has become available for a Laboratory Assistant, based in Kempton Park. The purpose of this role is to ensure that the laboratory is maintained in such a way that it ensures the smooth running of the processes necessary for seed testing and/or storage, as well as to assist seed analysts in their tasks relating to the determination of seed quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Use the prescribed method, as indicated by laboratory superiors, according to ISTA Rules for the specific species
• Daily temperature readings need to be made on all apparatus, store room and laboratory; problems need to be reported to the Laboratory Supervisor.
• Ensure that the laboratory and all equipment belonging to the laboratory are at all times kept clean and in a good condition – report any malfunctions immediately.
• Discarding of excess seed and sand on a daily basis as prescribed.
• Thoroughly clean the relevant equipment before and after operating it.
• General maintenance of the seed store and the discarding of samples, on a regular basis, as prescribed by laboratory superiors.
• Ensure that the laboratory, seed store and store room are clean and tidy at all times
• Perform any reasonable task allocated by superiors to ensure the effective functioning of the seed testing laboratory.

• Grade 12 with Biology and Maths (ideal)
